Jay Thornbury

Jay Thornbury is a Cincinnati-based, genre-fluid bassist and musician known for his relentless commitment to making great music. Originally from central Indiana, Jay has spent over a decade developing his voice on the bass, combining a strong self-taught foundation with dedicated study under respected players Nick Tucker and Aaron Jacobs.

Rooted in jazz, funk, R&B, and rock, Jay’s playing is versatile, expressive, and deeply groove-oriented. Drawing inspiration from legends like James Jamerson, Ray Brown, Rocco Prestia, and Paul McCartney, he brings both musicality and adaptability to every performance—whether locking into a pocket, navigating complex arrangements, or elevating a live ensemble with feel and precision.

Jay maintains an active and diverse performance schedule, regularly playing weddings, corporate events, jazz engagements, bar gigs, and original music projects. His experience spans collaborations with artists and organizations including but not limited to Zolmon’s Wolfgang, Thomas Putterbaugh Quintet, Matt Tolentino, The Queen City Wingmen, Bluewater Kings Band, and Louis Pettinelli Entertainment Company. Career highlights include performances at the Cincinnati Bengals halftime show, Indy Jazz Fest, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Carmel Palladium, and Clowes Hall.

In addition to performing, Jay provides professional, all-inclusive live sound services. Equipped with a full-scale PA system and a detail oriented approach, he manages every aspect of live audio from setup to final mix, ensuring a seamless and high-quality experience for events of all sizes. His sound work supports weddings, corporate functions, bar performances, and outdoor concerts alike.

Beyond bass, Jay also plays guitar and sings, bringing a well-rounded musical perspective to every project. Known for his strong reading ability, trained ear, and dependable professionalism, he is a trusted collaborator in a wide range of musical settings.
